Property Details

The ranch headquarters are very basic and include an older ranch home, a horse barn, calving barn and set of corrals. The long-time present owners have done extensive work to develop stock water throughout the ranch and have maintained the fences in every pasture.

The Horpestad Ranch is in strong grass country and has beenĀ utilized as both a cow calf operation and yearling outfit. Swimming Woman Creek dissects the ranch for over 5 miles and is an excellent year around water source while providing ample cover for livestock. Productive hay meadows are located in close proximity to the headquarters with over 200 flood irrigated acres, leaving the balance as predominantly rangeland. The Horpestad Ranch is cross fenced into multiple pastures while stock water is plentiful. Cattle travel less than one mile to access multiple water sources throughout the ranch.

The Horpestad Ranch provides unlimited opportunities to hunt good populations of mule deer, whitetail deer along with antelope and elk. While the big game hunting is outstanding, this area is well known for it’s upland bird hunting, especially for Hungarian partridge along with healthy populations of sharptail grouse and sage grouse. The private small stream fishing is surprisingly good with just over five miles of Swimming Woman Creek, numerous beaver dams, and one nice sized reservoir that has been stocked with trout.

The Horpestad Ranch is a short distance from the Jefferson division of the Lewis and Clark National Forest in the Big Snowy Mountains. Some of its well-known features in addition to the many miles of hiking trails on the National Forest are Crystal Lake and Big Ice Cave. If you were to hike to Greathouse Peak, which is the highest peak in the Big Snowy Mountains at 8,681 feet, you can look north all the way to Canada and south to Wyoming.
